Information for Physicians
Serving as a welcome alternative to crutches or walkers, the RollerAid was first introduced to the rehabilitation market in 1992. In 2003 the RollerAid received a major upgrade that increased strength and stability and added a host of comfort and ease of use features. The addition of the One Touch Straight feature in 2006 that allows patients to quickly and easily lock the turning front casters in the straight ahead position along with comfort features such as ergonomic handlebars with soft touch handgrips created the safest, most maneuverable, lightest, smallest and most comfortable turning leg support scooter available today.
Using the RollerAid will limit muscle atrophy while promoting better healing by increasing blood flow to the affected limb and eliminating weight bearing. Analysis of rental data has shown conclusively that many patients see reductions in time to weight bearing of 20-30%. The use of bright colors and a sophisticated and elegant design provides an emotional lift to patients that supports their recovery. Patients actually enjoy using the RollerAid leading to higher compliance. It is no wonder that the RollerAid has been rented by more patients than any other turning leg scooter.
Patient Benefits:
- Provides a painless and easy to use alternative to crutches or a walker
- Swiveling front wheels for easy steering and maneuvering in even the smallest space no more lifting to turn or multiple forward and back movements to make a tight turn
- One touch straight feature allows patients to lock in straight ahead position for side slopes
- Eliminates tripping or falling seen with crutches leading to fewer re-injuries
- Easy rolling caster system means less fatigue
- Frees up hands
- Comfort and ease of use features improve patient compliance leading to 20-30% reduction in time to weight bearing
- Limits muscle atrophy by strengthening proximal muscles in affected leg which helps transition to full weight bearing. Some physicians and physical therapists have already started using the RollerAid during the transition to full weight bearing as a gait training aid.
- Improves circulation in affected leg
- Partially elevates affected leg for less pain and swelling
- Bench can be used as a seat or foot stool during rest
- Folds in seconds for transport or storage (no need to disassemble)
- Basket and water bottle holder (great for re-hydration after surgery) included free with every unit
Not only does the RollerAid take less energy to propel than a walker or crutches, it also provides a stable platform as patients move around or stand. Several podiatrists and orthopedic surgeons, as well as one ER physician, have used the RollerAid while performing surgeries on patients such is the stability of the unit!

Insurance Coverage:
Most Private Insurers provide support for the RollerAid leg support scooter subject to users having coverage for durable medical equipment. Typical rates are 70-80% after deductibles have been paid.
Medicare has granted an HCPCS code of E0118 for the RollerAid (leg scooters with and without wheels) but unfortunately has not yet provided a cost estimate. As a result Medicare generally down codes all leg scooters to the equivalent of a pair of crutches for payment purposes. Secondary insurance, however, generally covers much of the difference.
It s strongly recommended that patients call their insurer and determine likely coverage before committing to rent or buy a RollerAid leg support scooter.
L&I/Workers Compensation generally support the use of the RollerAid. Some L&I staff will encourage the use of the RollerAid since it can, in some circumstances, allow for an earlier return to work. After getting a prescription for the RollerAid from your physician call your case worker to review getting necessary authorization.
TriCare/TriWest (military) has been extremely supportive of RollerAid use. It is vital, however, that you obtain pre-authorization. If you are being treated off-base you will need to have the RollerAid signed off by your base physician.
